Nuxalk Nation

Nuxalk Ancestral Territory is composed of both land and marine areas, with the land portion totalling about 18,000 square kilometers. Large watersheds draining several rivers and streams, deep valleys and fjords, and glaciated peaks of the Pacific Coast Range Mountains characterize our Ancestral Territory.

Nuxalk Nation is a mixture of many villages that were distributed throughout kulhulmcilh (our land). The Ancestral Territory is comprised of Kimsquit, Dean Channel, Labouchere Channel, Burke, Kwatna, North and South Bentick Arm.

Our Nuxalk Identity and Spirit are connected directly to our Ancestral land and marine resources. As Nuxalkmc, we know that one will not survive without the other. Our Nuxalk Ancestors were one with the land and water, which ensured all Nuxalkmc were provided for without sacrificing the needs of future generations. It is our responsibility to honour the wisdom of our Ancestors and respect what is provided to us by Tatau.

Our Hereditary Chiefs, Elders and community leaders will lead the way, to ensure that our people are always provided for. It is now time for Nuxalkmc to re-establish a healthy balance with our environment. Our Nuxalk customs, traditions, and spiritual values will provide a means of self-reliance and social well-being. The Nuxalk Nation has never ceased to affirm our ownership and jurisdiction over all our seas, lands and resources.
